Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers defends under-fire £1.5 Million Defender

Celtic defender Jack Hendry is going through a rough spell.

Celtic as a whole are enduring a very poor season so far, but that is particularly true of Hendry.

The 23-year-old, a £1.5 million signing by the Hoops from Dundee in January, has had a rotten first couple of months, exacerbated by a sloppy performance in Thursday’s 3-1 defeat away to Salzburg in the Europa League.

It was the latest in a long line of questionable performances by the Scot, who has filled in for Filip Benkovic in recent weeks.

But Rodgers has praised the young centre-back for his attitude despite the sinking confidence, and continues to back him to turn into a fine defender at some point.

He told The GET: “Sometimes in the modern game, you get players that can remove themselves out of that situation and they are not available. He has never, ever done that – ever – whether it’s training [or matches]. That’s what tells you everything about the player.

“He is honest, he knows he can make mistakes but he’s learning in a tough school where wins are important. I’m pretty confident he will grow from this and show he’s a good player.”

With Benkovic having missed the last couple of weeks, Hendry might well start against Saint Johnstone again this afternoon, and you fear for his confidence if he has a bad game.

On the flip side, you wonder if a good performance could be the perfect tonic and help revitalise him somewhat
