Celtic Have Second Chance To Sign Porto Defender After Failing In January.

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic reportedly wanted Porto’s Fernando Fonseca for £2million but he was seemingly Ukraine-bound.

Celtic were linked with a whole host of right-backs during the January transfer window, and they may be forced to enter the market again in the summer without an option-to-buy clause in the contract of the Borussia Dortmund loanee Jeremy Toljan.

With Toljan’s form dipping alarmingly since that red card away to Valencia, Celtic should not stop looking for potential alternatives.

The Scottish Sun reported in January that Celtic were weighing up a £2 million bid for young Portuguese right-back Fernando Fonseca, who has shone for Porto’s B team and very nearly joined Juventus last summer.

In many ways, the 21-year-old Fonseca would be a typical Celtic signing – young, promising and blessed with a potential substantial re-sale value.

He also looked to be off the market, however, with a move to Ukraine and Zorya Luhansk edging closer. Though reports from O Jogo might have suddenly handed Celtic a second chance to bring Fonseca to Glasgow.

It is claimed that Fonseca’s move to Zorya has collapsed due to a disagreement in negotiations. As a result, the 22-year-old looks set to leave Porto in the summer instead with a move to Luhanski now seemingly off the table.

Something for Celtic to consider then as Toljan begins to struggle.
