Stephen McManus’ promotion to operate in the first-team squad has been confirmed by Celtic.

For the last two years, the longtime Celtic and Scotland defender has been employed for Tommy McIntyre and the Backup squad and worked against Hibs and Livingston for the first team in the post-Dubai fixtures.

McManus will operate on preparation with the first team and on match days with a man down with the backroom team after Neil Lennon resigned.

Martin O’Neill offered McManus his first team start, but it was under Gordon Strachan which he made huge progress after Neil Lennon departed for Nottingham Forest in 2007 when McManus took over as captain for two seasons under Gordon Strachan.

It was Strachan who introduced the defender to Middlesbrough before moving to Motherwell in Scotland, where he took his first coaching move.

Tomorrow, for the first time against Aberdeen, Kennedy, McManus and Gavin Strachan will be in charge.
