Celtic Going For Free Option As They Look For Second Left Back!!!

2 min read

Celtic’s left-back situation seems to be in a state of confusion at the moment. The one player the Hoops have for that position is Boli Bolingoli.

However, attempts to add to that position seems to be difficult for the club. The Daily Record are reporting that the Hoops are not going to sign Kilmarnock’s Greg Taylor, as their £3 million asking price is too much.

The report goes on to claim that Rosenborg’s Birger Meling is now the main target. However, the Scottish Sun is reporting that Meling won’t be making the move to Glasgow, and that Taylor is still a target.

The situation all seems a bit muddled. Perhaps it could be solved if the Hoops sign a left-back who isn’t Taylor or Meling.

One such player is available, and on a free transfer too. That player is former Norwich and Swansea left-back Martin Olsson.

It is a bit odd that Olsson hasn’t managed to find a new club since leaving Swansea in the summer. Last season he was in and out of the Swansea side, making only 17 appearances.

However, he is a vastly experienced player. He has played for Sweden 47 times. He was part of the side which reached the quarter-final of the last World Cup.

Obviously the signing of an out of contract defender who is 31 would not be a long-term deal for Celtic.

He is certainly worth taking a gamble on, on a one-year contract though. It would provide the Hoops with some much needed competition for Boli Bolingoli.

Celtic fans would probably prefer to see the Hoops land either Taylor or Meling rather than sign a free agent. That would mean that none of the Kieran Tierney money would have been spent on a replacement.

At the moment though, it looks like the Hoops are finding it difficult to sign another left-back. Therefore, it makes sense to sign Olsson on a short-term deal.
