Celtic have listened to the supporters and with quick fashion agreed to pay Motherwell £3 million for the teenage wonder kid and potentially offer a player on loan in return.
The Fir Park club rejected bids, one of £2m, from Celtic and Barnsley this week for the 19-year-old.
Turnbull was last month named Scottish Football Writers’ young player of the year after scoring 15 goals in his breakthrough season at Fir Park.
The deal would smash Motherwell’s previous club record sale of £1.7m for Phil O’Donnell to Celtic in 1994.
Turnbull will now discuss personal terms with the Scottish champions.
Motherwell said in a statement: “We have continued to stand by what we believe is a fair value for David. In light of the negotiating stance we have adopted, the money we stand to receive will be transformational for us as we continue to operate as a fan-owned club.”
Our Verdict On The Transfer
Celtic have just purchased a teenager with 15 goals to his name in Scotland’s top flight league and with a great deal of first team experience to his name.
For me that on its own is worth the £3 million as with the McGinn saga last season we severely lost out on a great player and Celtic didn’t want that to happen again.
Celtic and Lennon have not made a purchase for the future, Turnbull has proved hes a first team player and Celtic have a very good record of improving players to play at the highest level.
All you need to do is look at the players in the Celtic team now, you have vital players in the likes of Ajer, Forrest, McGregor and Tierney along with many more who at some point were youth players or just never given the time of day.
Turnbull will definitely prove to Celtic fans this season that his price tag is justified and will be a great asset in the coming season.
