Celtic have joined Newcastle United and Burnley in the race to sign Sampdoria’s 6ft 3inch central defender Omar Colley as Lennon still needs to strengthen his defensive options.

The Gambian international has been heavily linked with an exit from Sampdoria and the Scottish Champions are one of the main interested parties.

Southampton and West Ham United were interested last January and now the big defender has a host of clubs after his services.

Although Sampdoria are seeking a fee of £13 million there could still be a deal for Celtic to negotiate as there have been fears regarding Kristoffer Ajer’s long-term future at Celtic Park. Hatem Elhamed has also found it difficult to break into the first team since joining in 2019.

Colley, 27, made 30 Serie A starts in 2019-20, averaging 4.8 clearances per game and could be a vital asset to Lennon’s 10 in a row push.

“Already in January there were real interests from the Premier League. No offers have been made, but he could adapt himself to English football by characteristics,” his agent Umberto Riva told TMW in June.
