Celtic must sign Wanyama as Browns replacement

2 min read

After Brendan Rodgers lost his first Old Firm Derby at the Celtic helm at the end of the year, the need for a bit of midfield steel is apparent and the Glasgow outfit may have no better chance than now to re-sign Victor Wanyama – and the Kenyan international would give just that.

What’s the word?

Well, according to The Daily Mail, Wanyama is set to be part of a Spurs exodus this month as Mauricio Pochettino and co plot a brutal £75m clear-out of those surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane – the 52-cap Kenya international has made just four Premier League appearances this season and is recovering from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Celtic captain Scott Brown has been subject to interest from Australian outfit, Western Melbourne, but The Scottish Sun reports that ‘Broony’ has turned down the offer from Down Under.

The 33-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is said to be considering his future – Hoops high-ups must not wait for the title to be lost by signing his replacement in Wanyama this month.

Tough tackler

If one thing is certain from the loss to Rangers, it’s that Celtic need a midfield revamp – the Gers bossed the middle of the park at the Ibrox and Brown was particularly poor.

A move to resign Wanyama, who left Parkead for Southampton in 2013, would be a sensational bit of business and address the lack of a quality, no-nonsense, tough-tackler to protect the back four.

WhoScored lists the 27-year-old’s tackling and passing as ‘strong’ – two qualities essential in your defensive midfielder if you’re Celtic and wish to avoid repeating the embarrassment of losing to your biggest rivals.

With Spurs keen to get him out the door, the number 12 may be available for a cut-price fee – what do you think, Bhoys and Ghirls?
