Celtic should offer cash plus player on loan for their summer transfer target.

As the Celtic-David Turnbull saga continues on, should the Hoops use a player swap as a potential bargaining tool?

So far, Celtic have reportedly been snubbed with their £2million offer for the midfielder (BBC). Motherwell apparently want at least £3m (BBC), with no sign as of yet that the Hoops will offer it.

According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic weren’t happy with negotiations going public. They reportedly feel ready to look at other options instead of getting drawn into a saga.

Now, in an ideal world, Celtic would just pay the asking price of £3m and get this over with. No fan knows the budget we have this summer, but it could easily be that the Hoops felt they could get Turnbull for less.

And maybe they still could, by allowing Motherwell to dip into Celtic’s youth talent for potential acquisitions.

Of course there are the unattainable youngsters. The likes of Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston shouldn’t be allowed to go anywhere this season. But what about potentially allowing Motherwell to take young Ewan Henderson out on loan?

He would give the Steelmen something different going forward. A genuine physical threat in the midfield who has proven at Celtic he has the ability to boss games. Motherwell could easily role in a record transfer fee for Turnbull as well as a proven top quality youth player in Hendo.

A win-win for Celtic

For Celtic, this would surely be a win-win situation. Not only do they land their man for less than the asking price, but they also get a key talent game-time on a weekly basis. Henderson certainly needs it, as he’s a prospect we simply can’t allow to dither on the sidelines.

Motherwell are a terrific football club for developing young talent. They’ve also moved on Jake Hastie to Rangers, and have helped move on the likes of Louis Moult, Cedric Kipre, and Marvin Johnson for good sums. They would prove to be a terrific platform for Henderson to show what he’s made of.

It would allow Motherwell to get as good an alternative as they could possibly hope for to Turnbull for a full year. That would give them plenty of time to search for a more permanent replacement, whilst boasting a real goal threat in Henderson.

There’s no denying the fact that Motherwell may not accept it of course. They could just be out for the £3m alone and nothing else. And if that’s the case then fair enough.

But it would be nice to see Celtic offer a player like Henderson to Motherwell in a bid to test the waters. Regardless of what happens, Henderson in particular needs a place where he can play week-in, week-out.
