Celtic’s latest signing Maryan Shved has received a confidence boost if ever he needed one. The winger, who signed in January but spent the second half of last season with Karpaty Lviv, has been working hard for his country Ukraine.

He may only have made the bench for their recent 5-0 demolition of Serbia but that hasn’t stopped national team boss Andriy Shevchenko from praising him to the hilt.

The former AC Milan striker said: “I’ve been watching him closely for the past two weeks in our training camp.”

“It’s clear he has a lot of talent. There is still work to be done, but he has progressed hugely.

“He has just made a very big transfer for a massive club like Celtic and he is motivated to show them what he can do when he goes to Scotland.

“There’s no doubt he has improved a lot and he will go on to be a big player for Ukraine.”

Shevchenko’s words are likely to be echoed by the majority of the Celtic support who just want to see their new man in action. Shved has become a bit of a cult hero since signing in January. Hoops fans have marvelled at the portfolio of top goals he’s scored and they can’t wait to see him play in green and white next year.

Hopefully those expectations won’t hamper the 21-year-old. Big things are expected of him but that shouldn’t detract from the fact that he’s still a young guy who’s having to adapt to new country and lifestyle.

It’s kind of assumed that Shved will walk into the Celtic team but that may not be a given. He plays primarily as a right-winger meaning that he could be in direct competition with James Forrest. The Celtic number 49 has been a standout for club and country this season and is adored by Neil Lennon.

Shved may have to look at other areas where he can impact the team. He did play a number of his final matches for Karpaty as a lone striker so it will be interesting to see if Lennon takes note. We may have a new striker on our hands and not even know it.
