After missing out on Preston’s Ben Davies last night after Liverpool emerged with a late offer for the player who had previously agreed terms with Celtic, Celtic are seeking to bring in Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga today.

On Deadline Day, Peter Lawwell hoped to make a deal to get Davies up the road early, but the opportunity to join the English Champions was clearly a more enticing choice for the Preston defender, who would definitely drop out of the picture when Virgil Van Dijk, the former Celtic Hero, returns fully fit.

Liverpool is also looking at adding a second signing today of a central defender, Schalke central defender Ozan Kabak, so Davies will find competition for places in the starting eleven tough even with their current injury issues.

In order to get first-team football this season, Tanganga is said to be eager on a loan move. As Spurs’ recent poor form continued with a loss at Shane Duffy’s current club Brighton, the 21-year-old Tottenham defender, who is also wanted by West Brom, was an unused substitute yesterday.

Sky Sports News journalist Vinny O’Connor, meanwhile, discusses what happened with the relocation of Ben Davies:

“Preston’s Ben Davies is having a medical at Liverpool this morning. It might not be the only new arrival at Liverpool today.

“We can tell you a little bit about the deal to sign Davies. We’re told a total of £500,000 up front. Structured add-ons as well worth up to £1.1m. That’s based on success with the club, appearances, even an England appearance clause as well and a 20 per cent sell-on on profit clause in the deal,”

This has been a growing issue at Celtic over the years with the club’s failure to get deals done there and then, we then lose out on decent players because the club are busy haggling over a few bucks.

Ben Davies could have become a Celtic player in the last transfer window and it wouldn’t have cost the club that much.

But again the club are too late at the party and another team have swooped in to hijack the deal.

There are many cases of this same situation happening over the seasons and the main one that comes to mind would be John McGinn who is now flying high in the EPL.
