Chris Sutton has placed blame on Nicky Hammond for advising Celtic on splashing millions of pounds on a certain player who isn’t performing as he should.

The former Hoops striker has stated that Celtic can afford to not sign a new defender and instead look to the British transfer market and sign a new keeper as Vasilis Barkas seems a waste of money.

Neil Lennon has confirmed that he will look to sign a new defender this month as Chris Jullien will now be out for most of the remaining season, the French centre-back will be a huge loss as Celtic are lacking in that area of the squad.

While speaking on the RecordSport Podcast, Sutton brands Barkas as a huge waste of money and that pressure must be placed upon Nicky Hammond who’s main job is sourcing potential transfers for the club.

“We talk about pressure on Neil Lennon and of course there is, but what about the pressure on Nicky Hammond?

“The fact you look at the situation where Celtic have signed a goalkeeper [Barkas] for millions of pounds who hasn’t made a save this season.

“Jullien is a massive loss, but the fact Celtic don’t have a keeper of authority leaves them extremely vulnerable.

“I think Celtic can make do [without a new centre-half]. I’m not saying it’s perfect.

“But the position they can’t make do with is a goalkeeper.

“It’s probably sickening for Celtic fans watching Fraser Forster keep a clean sheet for Southampton against Liverpool on Tuesday with his presence and authority. It’s a priority position.

Chris Sutton does have a point in the fact that our Greek goalie hasn’t really made a save this season.

Although Barkas hasn’t been horrendous he still doesn’t make the Celtic support feel secure to which Fraser Forster had done.

With the great wall producing the goods for Southampton on Tuesday and kept a clean sheet against Liverpool, it’s safe to say his return will not happen.
