Alex McLeish has claimed that Celtic are ready to make a move for a known defender that the club has been keeping tabs on for the last few months now.

As Celtic’s trip to Dubai ended in the worst way possible with regards to 13 players having to self-isolate as a result of Chris Jullien testing positive for Covid-19.

The former Rangers and Scotland manager has insisted that the club’s recruitment chief Nick Hammond has watched Motherwell and Scotland star Declan Gallagher and the Hoops are ready to make a move.

McLeish spoke with Football Insider and gave his insight into the young Scotland star’s link with the current Scottish Champions.

“Is that the priority? You would think that with Jullien out for a right few weeks then that’s a massive loss,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“Who do you bring in? Do you have to plunge in for a well-known centre-back, an experienced centre-back – you certainly can’t bring in a rookie.

“The level of Celtic are striving for, I don’t know, they may be targeting the Motherwell centre-back (Gallagher) for instance, who I think was on Celtic’s books when he was a kid.”

If this is indeed true then Celtic cannot waste any time with offering a pre-contract and must make an offer to bring him in now.

Although this could be seen as a cheap option, big money cannot be spent on long-term players if we all want a decent manager to be installed come the summer.

We still have a fight on our hands for second place and that Champions League spot would be vital if we want to secure players next season and most importantly a future manager.
