Kris Commons: “Forster should be England’s Number One”

2 min read

Kris Commons has suggested that Fraser Forster should be England’s number one based off of his current form.

Forster who spent 4 years at Celtic, joining from Newcastle in 2012 on a permanent basis, has made an immediate impact since re-joining the Bhoys on loan after falling out of favor at Southampton.

Commons explained in his Daily Mail column that the 31 year-old shotstopper is undoubtedly the best keeper within the English National team pool this season. Everton’s Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has gone under a run of poor form during the course of this season as well as Southampton’s Angus Gunn, with Commons emphasizing that the door is wide open for Forster to claim the number one role within the England setup.

The Ex-Celt exclaimed: “Watching the Saints get pummelled 9-0 against Leicester last Friday night, Forster must have afforded himself a wry smile.

“Frankly, he’ll be glad to be away from the place -and it’s clear now that Southampton were far too quick to get rid of him.

“Just 24 hours previously, Forster was delivering a world-class performance for Celtic against Lazio in the Europa League.

“Make no mistake, he was Celtic’s true match-winner. Not just the spectacular diving save at the end, but the one he made earlier to prevent Lazio from going 2-0 ahead.

Forster celebrated passionately at the full-time whistle as he kept The Hoops in the thrilling contest with multiple saves coming at crucial points during the game

His form has been immense since the start of the season with the latest performance against a relentless Lazio side being similar to his heroics at Parkhead against Barcelona – all those years ago. The Englishman pulled off saved after save, whilst also producing two unbelievable stops nearing the final whistle to deny Lazio a way back into the match and ultimately help the Hoops see out the Italian outfit to record a 2-1 victory on the night.

The Englishman’s performance was one of the key factors in which Celtic were able to come away from Parkhead with a win and left many fans questioning The Saint’s decision to send him out on loan in the first place.

Celtic now look ahead to their clash with St.Mirren at Parkhead on Wednesday, with Jim Goodwin’s side sitting in 10th off the back of a relatively underwhelming performance from the Paisley side who went down 1-0 to Kilmarnock away at Rugby Park – and with Forster and his defensive back line in such great form at the minute, a victory would seem less than likely as Celtic look set to cruise to what looks to be another 3 points.
