Celtic look to have been defeated by Middlesbrough in their pursuit of Charlotte FC midfielder Riley McGree, Football Insider have exclusively revealed.
Ange Postecoglou has not messed about this window when it has come to player recruitment, adding four additions in the form of Johnny Kenny, Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda, and Reo Hatate to his already talented roster.
Nevertheless, he now looks to have been gazumped in his efforts to land his latest potential recruit owing to recent reports.
Football Insider has exclusively uncovered that McGree is currently at the Riverside Stadium for a medical with Middlesbrough, following a breakthrough in talks with his current employers Charlotte FC.
The Celts were previously bullish about their chances of landing the attacking midfielder, however, it is thought that the Sky Bet Championship side has offered up higher wages to McGree and have convinced him to make the move to Yorkshire over Glasgow.
McGree setback will come as a bitter blow to Celtic
No doubt, McGree is a talented player who would’ve fitted nicely into Ange Postecoglou’s style of play. He is highly-rated in his homeland, whilst has scored twice and assisted another two goals in 13 appearances in 2021/22 on loan at Birmingham City.
In spite of this, there will be plenty of other potential options that the Aussie manager can turn to solidify the depth within his squad. Hopefully, we can see some action on the transfer front in the midfield area in the next few weeks.
