Celtic have faced a potentially fatal setback in their pursuit of Charlotte FC midfielder Riley McGree, with talks reportedly breaking down at the 11th hour for his signature.
Making swift inroads to secure his January targets, Ange Postecoglou has managed to sign four first-team recruits this month in the form of Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, and Johnny Kenny.
However, they could have hit a brick wall in their latest efforts to bring in further bodies owing to recent reports.
Initially, it was thought that McGree to Celtic was all but a done deal after the Celts agreed a £3 million fee with his current employers to lure the attacking midfielder to Parkhead. Now, it is thought that the move could be potentially scuppered.
Middlesbrough are mooted to have made a counter-offer for the Aussie of around £5 million, as well as proposing a higher wage for his services than the Bhoys at £14k per week. Nottingham Forest is also in the market for the 23-year-old playmaker.
Losing out on McGree would be a blow for Celtic, though there is plenty more fish in the sea
Undoubtedly, McGree is a player who would instantly improve the quality and depth of the Celtic squad. In the Sky Bet Championship this year on loan at Birmingham City, he recorded an average rating of 7.02/10 and was generally regarded as one of their best performers.
Despite this, there are plenty of similar players to McGree that the Hoops could target should he choose to commit his future to someone else. Only time will tell with regards to whether the Australia international will end up in Glasgow before the end of this month.
