Newcastle United will continue their pursuit of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old is keen on a transfer to St James’ Park and is keen to leave Parkhead this season.
The Magpies are expected to make an £8 million bid for the Norwegian, but Celtic value the agile defender at £25 million, a 68 percent difference in valuations.
Ajer, who has 173 appearances for Celtic, is priced at just £3.6 million by Transfermarkt, owing to the fact that his Celtic contract expires in the future.
Ajer will become the club’s most costly departure of all time, surpassing Kierney’s transfer to Arsenal in 2019. Celtic’s estimate of £25m is, in our view, a major challenge, because if either side meets their expectations, Ajer will become the club’s most expensive departure of all time, surpassing Kierney’s move to Arsenal in 2019.
However, because Ajer wants to leave and is reluctant to sign a new contract, this summer seems to be the club’s only opportunity to get a decent fee for his services.
Should his situation remain the same going into 2022, he could speak with sides outside of Scotland in regards to a pre-contract agreement, leaving the Hoops with nothing.
In our view, it may make sense to accept a cut-price figure and then reinvest ahead of the 2021/22 season.
The Hoops only paid £540,000 for the defender in 2017, so they’ll be making a huge profit should they accept the reported £8m bid.
